Many thanks to those of you who responded when I asked for an opinion on whether I should keep Guillaume as the name of a character in my book set in 1866 Paris. The vote was 9 to 1 in favour of keeping the name and there were many excellent reasons given why I should do so. The opinion of those who did not like the name was also very valuable because, in the book, Guillaume is a nasty character. Perhaps it is suitable that he have a name that isn’t as palatable as the protagonists’.
